The Stormwater Management Utility is a division of the Department of Sewers for the City of Cincinnati and provides for the effective management and financing of the stormwater system within the public right-of-way within the City of Cincinnati. This utility serves the following purposes:

• Improve the health, safety and welfare of the public by providing for the safe and efficient capture and conveyance of stormwater runoff and the correction of stormwater problems
• Design, coordinate, construct, manage, operate, maintain, inspect, and enforce the city's stormwater rules and regulations
• Enhance the environment through responsible urban stormwater resources management techniques

Mission Statement

Protect the lives and property of the citizens by capturing, controlling, and conveying stormwater runoff safely and efficiently through the City.

SMU Does Manage:

• Over 300 miles of storm sewers
• Approximately 30,500 inlet and intake structures
• Over 6,000 storm sewer manholes
• The Mill Creek Barrier Dam
• Four Pump Stations

SMU Does NOT Manage:

• Sanitary sewers (wastewater)
• Combined sewers (sanitary and storm water in the same pipe)
• Creeks and streams on private property
  • The respective property owner is responsible for maintaining their own portion of the creek or stream.
  • These waterways must be kept clear of debris and open to full water flow to minimize flood impacts.

The Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati (msdgc.org) is responsible for these systems.
