Ohio state law requires private homeowner or renter insurance to be
used first in damage cases where a municipality is involved. You may
file a claim with the City of Cincinnati for sewer backup damages or
losses not covered by your private insurance policy (i.e., deductible
expense or excess losses). If you have homeowner or renter insurance
coverage that applies to sewer backups, you should contact your insurance
company immediately to report the incident and get instructions for filing
a claim. If you need supporting information from MSD to file with your
insurance claim, such as copies of photos or damaged property lists,
you can obtain them by calling the Claims Assistance Desk at MSD’s
Customer Service Center. The phone number is (513)
771-5246.
The City of Cincinnati also has a process for filing a claim. See claim form (under 'Downloads' at upper left side of page) for more details. Remember, state law requires private insurance to be used first in damage cases where a municipality is involved. The City will review your claim and any action by your private insurance carrier, and then contact you with its determination. Water-In-Basement claims filed with the City are generally resolved within 60 days.
