Capital Improvement Program

Each year the divisions of the Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD) meet to discuss and develop the coming year's Capital Improvement Program (CIP). The divisions of MSD, governmental and municipal agencies, environmental concerns, and public interests generate projects. New projects and those from previous years are rated and assigned a priority based on the needs of MSD. The prioritization process is updated each year to meet ever-changing demands. MSD is addressing two Consent Decrees to improve its infrastructure, assets, and the quality of the area's water. The following is a rundown of the project categories of the 2008 CIP projects. Note: A status report with updates on CIP projects may be found under Downloads at the left side of this page.

The 2008 Capital Improvement Plan budgets a total of $144 million in these categories:

  • Sanitary Sewer Overflows (SSO): Contains $15.9 million for projects that address wet weather overflows and capacity limitations in the sanitary-only system.
  • Sewers: Contains $32.8 million in projects to repair, rehabilitate, or replace sewers and pump stations.
  • Long Range Planning: Contains $37.8 million.
  • Combined Sewer Overflows (CSO): Contains $20 million in projects to reduce or eliminate the activity of several combined sewer overflows through separation or provide other modifications to improve the performance of the combined sewer system in the vicinity of CSOs.
  • Treatment: Contains $38.8 million in projects to continue upgrades to Wastewater Treatment Plants.
