The Metropolitan Sewer District's Taylor Creek Water Reclamation Facility was recently honored with a Platinum Peak Performance Award for continuous excellence in environmental protection. Given by the Association of Metropolitan Sewerage Agencies (AMSA), this award recognizes the facility for five consecutive years of 100 percent compliance with its National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit. Taylor Creek is one of 10 MSD facilities that won Peak Performance Awards.
This is a significant achievement and one of which we are very proud. The complexity of the NPDES permits makes it difficult for water reclamation facilities across the board to be in complete compliance - there are thousands of tests that must be met each year for a given plant to achieve perfection. This award is acknowledgement that our team at the Taylor Creek Water Reclamation Facility is not only getting the job done, but that they are doing it exceptionally well -- they have performed to perfection for five consecutive years.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's NPDES permit program was developed to protect and improve the water quality of the nation's lakes, rivers and streams and helps control water pollution by regulating point sources (such as pipes and man-made ditches) that discharge pollutants into the environment. The permits contain limits on what can be released and include monitoring and reporting requirements plus other provisions to ensure that the discharges will not harm the local water quality or public health.
Nine other MSD facilities also won Peak Performance Awards.
AMSA is a national trade association representing more than 300 of the nation's publicly owned wastewater treatment utilities. AMSA members serve the majority of the sewered communities in the United States and collectively treat and reclaim over 18 billion gallons of wastewater every day. The Metropolitan Sewer District has been a member of AMSA since 1990.
Every day, the Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati (MSD) manages the effective collection and treatment of more than 200 million gallons of wastewater and actively maintains 3,000 miles of sanitary and combined sewers that run through the 49 municipalities and townships of Hamilton County. Owned by Hamilton County and operated by the City of Cincinnati, MSD is committed to continually maintaining and improving its wastewater collection and treatment systems for the betterment of both public and environmental health.
