MSD Notice of Construction:
Sycamore Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion Project
In Symmes Township
Hamilton County, Ohio

October 3, 2005 – The Board of County Commissioners recently approved funding for the Sycamore Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion Project. Managed by the Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati (MSD), construction is scheduled to begin in October of 2005 and is expected to be substantially complete by March 2008 for Phase 1 & 2 (see below) of the project.

The Sycamore Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant serves more than 30,000 customers in Blue Ash, Indian Hill, Madeira, Montgomery and Sycamore and Symmes Townships. Planned expansions and improvements to the plant will increase its current design average treatment capacity from 6 to 9 million gallons per day (MGD) during dry weather and from 32 to 50 MGD during wet weather. Improvement and expansion plans to the plant will also incorporate measures to prevent future large-scale flood damage.

The project is divided into four phases: Phase 1 – expands the plant’s peak wet weather treatment capacity from 32 to 50 MGD. In addition, the plant will replace its current chlorine disinfection system with a new ultraviolet disinfection system and increase plant influent and effluent pumping capacity. Phase 2 – expands the plant’s capacity for handling solids generated by the wet weather treatment system and the upgraded plant. It also includes expansions and/or improvements to preliminary, primary and secondary treatment. Phase 3 – completes any necessary improvements and/or expansions to achieve a design average treatment capacity of 9 MGD. Phase 4 – includes various improvements such as new plant lighting, better roadways and construction of a new Service Building. The awarded construction cost of Phases 1 & 2 of project is $21,037,000 and the General Contractor is Reynolds Inc.

This project is part of MSD’s ongoing Capital Improvement Program (CIP), which is focused on continually updating and improving the operation of MSD’s wastewater collection and treatment systems.

Every day, the Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati (MSD) manages the effective collection and treatment of more than 200 million gallons of wastewater and actively maintains 3,000 miles of sanitary and combined sewers that run through the 49 municipalities and townships of Hamilton County. Owned by Hamilton County and operated by the City of Cincinnati, MSD is committed to continually maintaining and improving its wastewater collection and treatment systems for the betterment of both public and environmental health.
