Combined Sewer Overflow No. 450 Elimination, Butler Street

Cincinnati, March 6, 2007 - Managed by the Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati (MSD), Larry Smith Contractors, Inc. completed the first phase of the project on March 5, 2007, The project will eliminate Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) No. 450, located in Butler Street.

The project is a two phased project which will eliminate combined sewer overflows to the Ohio River in compliance with the “Global Consent Decree”. The first phase of the project involved excavating within the south end of Butler Street necessary for the relocation of one sanitary lateral in preparation for eliminating CSO No. 450 in a second phase. The second phase of the project, in which existing sewer plugging and manhole bottom remodeling will be performed within surrounding existing manholes, is anticipated to begin this summer.

This project is part of MSD’s ongoing Capital Improvement Program (CIP), which is focused on continually updating and improving the operation of MSD’s wastewater collection and treatment systems.

Every day, the Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati (MSD) manages the effective collection and treatment of more than 200 million gallons of wastewater and actively maintains 3,000 miles of sanitary and combined sewers that run through the 49 municipalities and townships of Hamilton County. Owned by Hamilton County and operated by the City of Cincinnati, MSD is committed to continually maintaining and improving its wastewater collection and treatment systems for the betterment of both public and environmental health.
